Bruckner: The Hazing Epidemic STUDENTS FALL VICTIM TO HAZING EPIDEMIC: UNITY AT WHAT COST? Helene Bruckner * I. INTRODUCTION As many college students do every year, nineteen year old Timothy Piazza decided to pledge to the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. 1 However, on the night of February 2, 2017, Piazza was not aware that this night of pledging would be his last few hours on earth. 2 The hazing activities revolved around the forced consumption of large amounts of alcohol. 3 As a result, Piazza became very intoxicated, 4 which led to his falling down a staircase where he suffered a traumatic and ultimately fatal brain injury. 5 The Beta Theta Pi 6 fraternity brothers hazed Piazza when the activities commenced with “The Gauntlet,” which is a sequence of drinking events where the pledges consume various drinks in about *Touro College Jacob D.
